In my expanding role working with bipolar and life insurance, I posted a blog a week or so ago on this subject. What a tough circumstance. Pregnancy with untreated bipolar? Pregnancy while taking meds?

The good news is that the myth about bipolar being uninsurable for life insurance has been busted. More and more companies are opening to the idea that people who are compliant with their treatment and are leading stable lives are insurable at fair rates.

What I am really interested in seeing is the rates of post-partum triggering the first episode of bi-polar disorder. After my first child was born about 51/2 years ago, I suffered greatly from what I know now was a manic episode with psychotic features - I was actually diagnosed after the manic episode had passed as having Major Deppressive disorder. I recovered and did not have another mood disturbance until I had surgery to remove a benign breast lump. Once again, it went away and I didn't have a reoccurance until I was in the 3rd trimester with my second daughter. Upon delivery, I was seen by a hospital psychiatrist who labeled my disorder as bipolar 1 with psychotic features.

About 2 weeks prior 2 becoming pregnant I was prescribed Prozac along with Serzone, this was in 1999. I later found out I was pregnant and decided not 2 take anything. After the birth of my daughter I experienced the most debilitating depression I have ever experienced, there were many factors that did not help the matter. The point I want to make is that I was very afraid 2 express my feelings 2 any1, I believe many women feel this way and are afraid as well. My fear was that some1 would take my child. I went several years b4 going back 2 meds because of this. I feel its unfair that people have 2 suffer because of these fears.
